Seven million Americans suffer from coronary heart disease (CHD).
This is the most common form of heart disease.
One of the most
serious risk factors for CHD is smoking.
In CHD, if not
enof oxygen-caring blood reaches the heart, the heart may respond
with sharp pains called angina. The pain is felt in the chest or
the left arm and shoulder. Heart attack can follow.
High blood
pressure can also arise from smoking. An estimated 25 million
American women have high blood pressure.

getting high blood pressure increases with age but smoking can
cause it prematurely
